I was listening to an interview with NT Wright, and very briefly he touched on 1 Peter 4:6, which people refer to when they talk about Jesus descending into hell and preaching to the people there. Essentially, he said he doesn’t have a good exegetical explanation for what that verse means.
Well, if he can’t figure it out, the rest of us are in trouble.
NT Wright does not “have a good exegetical explanation” for I Peter 4:6 because it is not talking about Jesus descending into hell, or the grave as it were, to preach to the physically dead. The dead in this context were the heathens who did not know God. Anyone who does not know God and Christ is considered dead already and are referred to as such many times in the Bible and the Gospels. Jesus came not only to save lost Jews but to save pagans as well; all whom God gave to Him.
The point most Christians are missing in these end days of Laodicea is that God’s Truth will not come from man’s ordained pastors and preachers and evangelists or noted theologians. It comes from “babes who have perfected praise,” which means they have not been tutored by mankind’s seminarys teaching man’s commandments and traditions instead of God’s.
Much love in Christ 🙂
